on a date with disappointment

Button Poetry was looking for original cover design concepts for “on a date with disappointment,” a book of poetry by the talented Najya Williams. I explored a couple different variations of covers showing different interpretations of disappointment and heartbreak. The final cover chosen by Williams features a custom illustration I created of a woman on a date sipping her drink, hopeful but disappointed yet again. I wanted the illustration to feel tactile so I included paper textures and grainy stippling.
